last Saturday, on Rare Disease Day 2026, we joined millions of people around the world in raising awareness for the 300 million individuals living with a rare disease, as well as their families, carers, and communities.
Rare Disease Day is a moment to pause, reflect, and recognize the strength, resilience, and challenges faced by people living with rare and complex conditions. It is also a day to highlight the important initiatives across Europe that bring care, expertise, and hope closer to those who need it most.
At ERN CRANIO, we are honoured to be part of this European effort. As one of the 24 European Reference Networks (ERNs), we work every day to connect clinicians, researchers, and patient representatives across borders to ensure that expertise is shared. Through knowledge sharing, virtual case discussions, and cross-border collaboration, ERNs help improve diagnosis, treatment pathways, and access to specialised care for people with rare diseases throughout Europe.
💙 Our patient representatives play a crucial role in this mission. They bring lived experience into our work and help shape projects that make a meaningful difference. With examples as the "With My Family to the Theatre" and "Face Me" Projects show how our patient representatives make a meaningful difference.
This spirit of collaboration is highlighted in the recent Health Awareness article "Connecting Europe for Rare Diseases", which explains how ERNs unite over 1,600 expert centres across 375 hospitals to accelerate diagnosis, improve access to care, and foster research across Europe.
