European Reference Network CRANIO presents

in collaboration with True Blue and Art Partner

With my family to the theatre

The main goal of the overall project is to look at the mutual understanding between care professionals and patients/caretakers, by working with two artists who approached the project’s main question in an innovative and artistic way.

As articulated by Prof. dr. Irene Mathijssen

(ERN CRANIO coordinator):

"How can we as doctors and healthcare providers be an even better guide for our patients, by seeing every aspect of their lives, and not just the physical part?

And by showing more of ourselves as human beings."

Avec Ma Famille Au Théâtre

"With my family to the theatre"
In English, an operating room is often referred to as an “operating theatre” or simply “theatre”

For patients with craniofacial conditions, parents play a crucial role. In the first years after birth, parents make decisions that are deeply impactful. There is a long-term relationship between patients, doctors, healthcare providers, and families. Research shows how vital a good doctor-patient relationship is to the well-being of the patient. It not only leads to more effective treatments and measurable health benefits but also reduces pressure on the healthcare system.

How do we deal with the permanent presence of patients’ families?
What is it like to always be the backup for your child?
And in what way can it help if doctors also reflect on their own families?

THE MOVIE

"Avec Ma Famille Au Théâtre" (With My Family at the Theatre) is a project with patients and surgeons from the craniofacial department at Hôpital Necker in Paris. The film shows the significant role of family, but also how their constant presence can sometimes be uncomfortable for both doctor, patient and family members. It’s a balancing act that requires preparation, precision, and attention, just as it does in the operating room.

In the film “Avec Ma Famille Au Théâtre,” the roles in the operating room are reversed, with patients assisting the surgeons—of course, always closely followed by their families...
A better doctor-patient-parent relationship deserves attention. When trust and understanding come from all three sides, it results in essential health benefits.

Art duo Zijlmans & Jongenelis

Art duo Sylvie Zijlmans & Hewald Jongenelis are known for their meticulously staged photographs, sculptures and video art. Since the beginnings their work is based on questioning our society.

True Blue - Creative Healthcare Communications

Cathy Hassels Mönning's mission is to use art to boost the quality of care and well-being. Art makes a positive contribution to our health. Especially if we see health as more than the absence of illness. That is not a new idea, but it is still relatively unknown. She puts the use of art into practice by drawing attention to proven initiatives and by being a ‘spacemaker’ for art and care professionals, to jointly develop new projects.

Art Partner

Sandra Boer is one of the founders of Art Partner. The company stands for those who seek different perspectives, who believe that imagination and ‘the artist way’ can be used as a catalyst for change. For organizational or societal challenges.
