The area of expertise covers all craniofacial anomalies and cleft lip/palate. Within the craniofacial team the following expertise is offered: plastic surgery, neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, pediatrics, intensive care pediatrics, anesthesiology, orthodontics, genetics, hand surgery, neurology, radiology, psychology, psychiatry, social work, speech therapy, prenatal diagnostics, and home ventilation. All care is coordinated by a nurse specialist, dedicated to craniofacial anomalies.
The cleft team offers: plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, ENT, pediatrics, orthodontics, genetics, psychology, social work, speech therapy, prenatal diagnostics, and home ventilation. A nurse specialist dedicated to cleft is present.
For ENT disorders, a multidisciplinary team of experts with long standing experience in treating rare and extreme cases of laryngeal and tracheal anomalies is active, the pediatric chest center (PCC, www.erasmusmc.nl/kinderthoraxcentrum). Contributors in the PCC are pediatric ENT, pediatricians, pulmonologists, pediatric surgeons, thoracic surgeons amongst other. They treat children with complex problems of heart, lungs, oesophagus and airway and are a national and international referral center for complex cases. All team members are involved in developing national guidelines and standards of care in close collaboration with the patients' society LAPOSA. On an international level outcome standards are being developed in ICHOM: cleft lip/palate is completed, craniofacial microsomia is in development and craniosynostosis is scheduled for next year.
The team offers fellowships craniofacial surgery, teaching for medical student, residents, referring pediatricians,prenatal doctors, family doctors and health care center doctors. Team members participate in the European Society of Craniofacial Surgery and the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery. Irene Mathijssen is the secretary-treasurer of this last society.
Research is an integrated part of care and this is done in close collaboration with all team members within the center, and also with other European craniofacial centers, particularly those from Nijmegen-The Netherlands, London-UK, Oxford-UK, Gothenborg-Sweden, Paris-France, and Boston-USA. Our expertise in care, training, education and research will contribute to the care for patients with a rare craniofacial disorder.
