The Berlin Interdisciplinary Centre for Craniofacial Surgery has been implemented in 1993 and provides specialised overregional and nationwide health service, regional for a population of 10-15 Mio inhabitans from Berlin, Brandenburg, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Mecklenburg -Vorpommern. It is situated at the Campus Virchow Klinikum of the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the largest University Hospitals in Germany. Due to this affiliation it provides full care for prenatal, perinatal, pediatric and adult patients who are affected by cranio- and dentofacial or cleft- related anomalies.For that pupose a multidisciplinary team is present consisting of pediatricians, anesthesiologists, pediatric neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons with special skills in facial plastic surgery, genetists, orthodontists, ENT, ophthalmologists, psycologists, speech therapists, anaplastologists.


Staged surgical corrections of patients affected by craniofacial or dentofacial anomalies are interdisciplinary discussed and planned mainly by pediatric neurosurgeons and maxillofacial surgeons according to the guidelines of the centre which are outlined by the following homepages:

The Centre for Craniofacial Surgery is accomplemented by a specialised cleft team which as well provides full patient service:

There is a close collaboration with all admitting institutions and structured follow-up of the patients by interdisciplinary meetings is guaranteed. Within the different surgical departments full residency training in the surgical specialities of maxillofacial and neurosurgery is provided. All surgical members of the craniofacial team are engaged in corresponding national and international scientific organisations (DGMKG, GCPA, EACMFS, DGNC, ESPN, ISPN, CNS). A special expertise concerning craniofacial reconstruction by means of Anaplastology is available.


Clinical and experimental research is well integrated in daily patient care and is provided by national and international collaborations.
